Colonial City Integral Reform Project launched

Colonial CityTo increase revenues and jobs

President Danilo Medina on Friday launched the Colonial City Integral Reform Project, which seeks to increase revenues and jobs throughout the iconic area most Dominicans and visitors call the Zone.

Tourism Development Program coordinator Maribel Villalona said the multi-destination strategy forms part of Government’s strategy to bolster tourism. Santo Domingo is an hour-and-a-half from the country’s top destinations and this means an opportunity for a project to raise competitiveness through diversification.

She said the project’s first phase will start at Meriño and Isabel la Catolica streets, and the work is expected to conclude within eight months. We hope this doesn’t exceed six months.

In the ceremony Santo Domingo mayor Roberto Salcedo said the city has more than enough attractions to become a real tourism center, so we feel it should become Dominican Republic’s main icon.

Last week the government said the project has US$29.7 million in funding from the Inter-American Development Bank, IDB.
